Dear fellow Block B’ers,
Today is a special day, one to which we have all been looking forward. Having become our home for a year and a half – a home that we have shared with a natural and deeply felt sense of community – “Block B” is now christened following a University Council resolution earlier this evening. Our community will henceforth be known as Chi Sun College.
You will notice that we share a similar name with another sister residential Hall on campus, in Jockey Club Student Village II, Suen Chi Sun Hall. Both College and Hall are named after the late Mr Suen Chi Sun, a visionary industrialist and leader in the manufacturing industry. The naming of our College recognises a new generous donation from his family through the Simatelex Charitable Foundation.
As a longtime HKU philanthropic partner, the Suen family previously established the Suen Chi Sun Professorship in Surgery, and donated to various medical research initiatives and scholarship programmes.
志新 (transliterated as “Chi Sun”) means “aspiring to innovate”. The four new Residential Colleges of Jockey Club Student Village III on Lung Wah Street are a new and innovative form of residential education at HKU. We aspire to offer a different, superlative residential scholarly experience that complements HKU’s century-long and proud tradition of hall education.
We are a very fortunate cohort of first members of Chi Sun College. We have been given the opportunity to shape the character of the College, during these formative years, for generations of students and fellows who will come after us. We are the beginning of a new tradition. Together you have already contributed, in many and myriad ways, to College life and have made it the vibrant community it is today. Let us continue to make history together – for Chi Sun College.
